Great Yarmouth 85

An AEC Reliance with a Pennine Coachcraft body purchased in 1964 as part of a batch of six buses for Great Yarmouth Corporation, 85 has a very short rear overhang for manoeuvring in tight areas. The batch had a relatively short life in Yarmouth and two of them, 82 and 85, were sold to Lowestoft Corporation in 1970 becoming 5 and 6. These numbers were retained when the undertaking became known as Waveney District Council in 1974. Whilst in Lowestoft, they were mainly used on the very lightly patronised service 6 (Central Railway Station to Hollingsworth Road via Norwich Road). When the council ceased bus operations in 1977, AEX 85B was used in Lowestoft by Shell Exploration and then by Lowestoft Crane Hire. The bus then became a mobile snack bar and later still became a static staff canteen with Hall's Precasters at Gorleston. The museum acquired the bus in a very sorry state in 2002 and it is currently undergoing an extensive rebuild. As can be seen from the photograph on the left, taken in March 2008, this is progressing well with the engine and major componants now refurbished and the bus is once again capable of moving under its own power.
