London 1858

The London County Council bought 101 of these powerful HR/2 type trams. Intended for use on hilly routes they had equal-wheel trucks with each axle powered. The design also incorporated automatic run-back and slipper brakes. Tramcar 1858 was built in 1930 by English Electric and when new had open driving positions. Ownership passed to London Transport in 1933 and, after withdrawal in 1952, 1858 was purchased by an enthusiast. It was on show for some years at  the entrance to Chessington Zoo for some years before coming to our museum.
