London Trolleybus 1812

For our Trolleybus Weekend in 2007 we have an unusual visiting vehicle from the Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft, Q1 class trolleybus 1812 which is owned by The British Trolleybus Society. This vehicle was restored to working order in 2000, but has suffered problems with the differentials, only returning to serviceable condition late in 2006. This will be the first time 1812 has run alongside trolleybuses from the Capital since withdrawal from Santander, Spain in 1974.

1812 was delivered to London Transport in 1948 to replace the ageing pre-London Transport fleet. as well as to cover shortages of vehicles due to war damage. Allocated to the Hampton Court area until 1961, 1812 was the last trolleybus into Hanwell depot, having completed the last trolleybus journey from Uxbridge in November 1960. The next change of allocation saw 1812 operate from Fulwell depot until withdrawn by London Transport on the 31st of January 1961. Next 1812 was shipped to Spain, the rear platform reversed and a centre door fitted, The following 13 years 1812 could be found on the 12km route 8 around the Bay of Santander. In 1975 The British Trolleybus Society decided to preserve a Q1, and two years later 1812 arrived in Dover on the 19th June 1977. However it was a further 21 years before a successful restoration was attempted. This year's Trolleybus Weekend will see two trolleybuses running together which operated from London Transport's Fulwell depot in 1961, although not at the same time. The other is our own 1521 allocated to Fulwell in November that year.
